Effective boundary condition at a rough surface starting from a slip condition

چکیده
We consider the homogenization of the Navier-Stokes equation, set in a channel with a rough boundary, of small amplitude and wavelength ǫ. It was shown recently that, for any non-degenerate roughness pattern, and for any reasonable condition imposed at the rough boundary, the homogenized boundary condition in the limit ε = 0 is always no-slip. We give in this paper error estimates for this homogenized no-slip condition, and provide a more accurate effective boundary condition, of Navier type. Our result extends those obtained in [6, 13], in which the special case of a Dirichlet condition at the rough boundary was examined.

Surface roughness and interfacial slip boundary condition for quartz crystal microbalances
The response of a quartz crystal microbalance ~QCM! is considered using a wave equation for the substrate and the Navier-Stokes equations for a finite liquid layer under a slip boundary condition. It is shown that when the slip length to shear wave penetration depth is small, the first-order effect of slip is only present in the frequency response. Importantly, in this approximation the frequen...
متن کاملThe effective slip length and vortex formation in laminar flow over a rough surface
The flow of viscous incompressible fluid over a periodically corrugated surface is investigated numerically by solving the Navier–Stokes equation with the local slip and no-slip boundary conditions. We consider the effective slip length which is defined with respect to the level of the mean height of the surface roughness. With increasing corrugation amplitude the effective no-slip boundary pla...
متن کاملModeling the combined effect of surface roughness and shear rate on slip flow of simple fluids.
Molecular dynamics (MD) and continuum simulations are carried out to investigate the influence of shear rate and surface roughness on slip flow of a Newtonian fluid. For weak wall-fluid interaction energy, the nonlinear shear-rate dependence of the intrinsic slip length in the flow over an atomically flat surface is computed by MD simulations. We describe laminar flow away from a curved boundar...

We consider Laplace and Stokes operators in domains with rough boundaries and search for an effective boundary condition. The method of homogenization, coupled with the boundary layers, is used to obtain it. In the case of the homogeneous Dirichlet condition at the rough boundary, the effective law is Navier’s slip condition, used in the computations of viscous flows in complex geometries. The ...
متن کاملExistence of a weak solution to a fluid-elastic structure interaction problem with the Navier slip boundary condition
We study a nonlinear, moving boundary fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem between an incompressible, viscous Newtonian fluid, modeled by the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, and an elastic structure modeled by the shell or plate equations. The fluid and structure are coupled via the Navier slip boundary condition and balance of contact forces at the fluid-structure interface. The slip boundary...
